LESLIE STREET GREENSPACES
These gable-end sites on Leslie Street at the junctions of Herriet, Keir and Forth Streets are the focus of attention of the local residents group who campaign for their improvement and re-designation ... they represent precious greens pace in Pollokshields most densely populated area and are a valuable addition to neighbouring Maxwell Square Park. EAST POLLOKSHIELDS QUAD
Area enclosed by Darnley Street, Kenmure Street and Leven Street. AppleMark
This largely hidden space represents one of the biggest success stories of community action in Pollokshields. Local residents, living in the flats surrounding this large open space, have reclaimed and transformed this neglected and abused site. Now a constituted group they have raised funds from a variety of sources to establish a wildlife area, special tree planting and an area of Spring bulb planting.
Visit this "Garden of the Singing Trees" to admire their efforts and enjoy their annual Fun Day which features:

  • Summer planting;
  • Sports tasters for kids;
  • Music;
  • Crafts including flag making.

THE DECK ACCESS FLATS ST ANDREWS DRIVE
In the late 1960's a number of original villas were demolished to make way for the development of corridor flats. Situated on a site of six acres, bordered by tree-lined streets, the deck flats enclose one of the largest areas of lawned greenspaces.

AppleMark The condition of the buildings is a major issue for residents and plans are in place for major renovations. New landlords Southside Housing Association will continue with this project. The amenity
space of the central green area of the flats has been used for a variety of art projects and will host a range of activities for Ready Steady Grow.

  • Window box planting - a RSG favourite so this year bring those from previous years to refill;
  • Storytelling with Alison Galbraith - magical tales for kids and the young at heart;
  • Fruit kebabs - what juicy fruits will you choose?
  • SSHA information - meet the Decks new landlords;
  • 259th Glasgow Guides - crafty fun with our East Pollokshields based group;
  • Face Painting for kids;
  • Theatre Modo - enjoy learning circus skills or just watching this entertaining group;
  • Impact Arts - this group have been working with local people on a major landscaping project (GHA wider action funding) and will be on site at St Andrews Crescent to showcase how work is progressing.

NAN McKAY HALL St JOHN'S ROAD
AppleMark The hall is one of the longest serving and best respected organisations within the area. For over 25 years it has provided a wide range of classes and activities and has provided great support to many of the community's elderly residents. The grounds contain one of the rarest trees in the district... a walnut which still stands in what was once the garden of 26 Maxwell Drive. Vist the hall for:

  • Teas;
  • Home-baking;
  • Craft Work Stall;
  • Children's entertainment provided by East Pollokshields Mobile Crèche.
